What makes Magfed different to normal paintball?

In regular paintball players have a hopper with around 200 paintballs on top of their marker (gun) and it feeds them down into the marker. In Magfed the paintballs are in a magazine much like a real gun and these have a maximum capacity of 30 but most are around the 20 mark, when you run out you remove one mag and replace it with another one, this makes it much more realistic and the overall play style is more tactical. Here's great little introductory video to Magfed paitnball

Is it expensive?

For those who wish to experience Magfed paintball, a day of games along with rental equipment can range from £25-£50, that's less than go karting, clay pigeon shooting and a ticket to Alton towers! Some event organisers such as OMG even offer heavily discounted tickets to first time player at their large weekend events making Magfed even more accessible.

Much like other hobbies if you decide to take part regualrly, Magfed paintball does have some costs involved in getting started, but a basic competitive setup isn't dissimilar to that of other sports. A beginner set of Golf clubs for example will be £200-£400 and you can definitely take up Magfed paintball with the same expenditure.

The ongoing expenses of Magfed are minimal. A typical walk on event fee is between £15 - £30 with longer weekend events costing around £70 but these include two or more days of organised games with multiple objectives, sometimes a night game and free camping available on site. These are played at a variety of venues from woodlands to MOD urban training facilities. The most common misconception is that paintballs make it an expensive hobby, but due to the magazines and the tactical nature of Magfed, players use far less than in other forms of paintball, a bag of 500 (costing £8-£12) will normally be enough for a full days play.

Does it hurt?

You will feel it when you get hit with a paintball, but Magfed is an adrenaline filled sport and that's where players focus normally is. Due to the tactical nature of Magfed and the limited amount of ammo players carry it's rare to be shot more than once or twice. There are products such as bounce vests that can be worn under your clothes to reduce the felt impact of a paintball.

Where do you play?

There are plenty of paintball sites all over the country that cater for magfed players with their own equipment, see our handy map to find one near you. Some sites hold regular magfed only walk ons, and other sites welcome magfed players to their open class walk on events. If you are thinking about taking up Paintball you can quite often go along to a walk on and rent equipment from the site, so you can try it before investing in your own gear, this is also a great way to see a wide variety of markers as players are always happy to show off their gear to you.

Do you need a license to buy guns?

No you don't need a licence or to go through any checks to buy paintball equipment, they only fire frangible rounds and at much lower velocities, so don't come under any firearms acts.
